French Regency, C. 1810-1840.Metal mounts and metal inlays were the prevailing fashion for decorating the surface of furniture. The dominance of metal for decorative purposes was established by the French designers who realized the necessity for decorating the flat uninterrupted surfaces of polishedmahogany. Favorite motifs were used as terminal figures, sphinxes, the winged sun disc. Especially characteristic were the metalpawfeet.
