Cobalt glass is a deep blue colored glass prepared by adding cobalt compounds to the molten glass. It is appreciated for its attractive color. It is also used as an optical filter in flame tests to filter out the yellow flame caused by the contamination of sodium, and expand the ability to see violet and blue hues. Under fluorescent light, cobalt glass has twice the effect.

Some people collect objects made from cobalt glass, amassing large collections. One popular example of cobalt glass is Bristol blue glass, as in the distinctive blue bottles of Harvey's Bristol Cream sherry. Cobalt glass changes the color of hydrochloric acid in a mixture of multi-colored cation

Early history
Dr John Wall, a physician, and William Davis, an apothecary, developed a unique method for producing porcelain and, in 1751, persuaded a group of 15 businessmen to invest in a new factory at Warmstry House, Worcester, England, on the banks of the River Severn. Dr Wall secured the sum of £4500 from the partners to establish the factory, known then as "The Worcester Tonquin Manufactory" - the original partnership deeds are still housed in the Museum of Worcester Porcelain.[1][2]

The dominance of metal for decorative purposes was established by the French designers who realized the necessity for decorating the flat uninterrupted surfaces of polishedmahogany. Favorite motifs were used as terminal figures, sphinxes, the winged sun disc. Especially characteristic were the metalpawfeet.

Back in the days when corsets were tight and morals strict, many a well-appointed home contained a piece of furniture specifically designed to catch a waning damsel succombing to "the vapors."
Referred to as a "Fainting Couch," this piece of furniture sat ready to "catch" the fall-out from improper conversation, excessive Sherry, or lack of oxygen. No refined lady was without one of these in her parlour.
Beautiful and functional, it was impossible not to look regal resting in its care-either awake or unconscious.
